Scores and CEFR
| CEFR | Listening | Reading | Total |
|---|---|---|---|
| C1 | 490 | 455 | 945 |
| B2 | 400 | 385 | 785 |
| B1 | 275 | 275 | 550 |
| A2 | 110 | 115 | 225 |
| A1 | 60 | 60 | 120 |
These are the minimum section scores for each CEFR level from ETS's mapping study. The total is just the two minimums added together. ETS calls them guidelines, not strict cut-offs, and suggests looking at Listening and Reading separately. The Reading C1 figure rests on weaker panel agreement than the others. There is no pass or fail. In Japan's public tests in fiscal 2025 (April 2025–March 2026), the average was 616 (Listening 337, Reading 279) across 755,473 test takers. ETS's worldwide report gives Japan's 2025 average as 564 (Listening 313, Reading 251).
